Discover Muay Thai (DMT) is one of Malaysia’s pioneer social businesses. DMT has a unique approach to solving the problems of urban poverty. Emulating the model Muay Thai village in Thailand, DMT aims to provide employment to the youth via martial arts.

This comes from the realisation that not all urban poor youth have the capacity to overcome their economic disadvantage through education. In fact, most urban poor – due to the toxic culture fostered in their communities – are seldom diligent students and prefer non-academic pursuits.

DMT takes the very root of the what makes martial arts great – discipline and camaraderie – and inculcates it in the youth in an environment familiar to them.

The first batch from DMT has just graduated, and the outcomes look promising. From the nine enlisted inside the programme, two secured full time jobs, two are attending skill training courses to get their lives back on track and one of the graduates has been fed the drive to pursue further education so that he is more employable in the future. The future looks bright for the urban poor through DMT.
