HiGi Energy is an ASEAN social startup founded to reduce the usage of firewood and charcoal by employing rural labors to convert agricultural waste into smokeless biomass briquettes to provide cleaner and cheaper alternative cooking energy for rural people, with the compensation business model from the high income market.
With grant funding from myHarapan, HiGi has been able to significantly expand the project. The team experienced a month living and working with local people in the rural area of the Philippines to test the practicality of their hypotheses, going from house to house and talking to villagers to comprehend their cooking routines, their hardships and their needs.
In addition to experimenting and developing products, HiGi also invested time widening its network and connecting with local partners as well as investors, thus gaining more credibility and support. With continued support from myHarapan, HiGi hopes to create a bigger platform for green energy and its young advocates across the ASEAN region.
The impact that HiGi wishes to bring to the community is in three categories: the environment, the people and the awareness. For the latter, for example, HiGi has visited numerous schools and colleges to spread the inspiration of conserving the environment, focus in providing greener solution for rural cooking. The team believes that gradually, the awareness towards energy sustainability will be raised, encouraging more action takers.
